Accomodation in Campus.

NUR SHAFIQA FITRI BINTI KAMSANI

PROMPT 4
3 AUGUST 2010

Accommodation is always provided for the students who study in the particular university. Nowadays, students tend to live in off-campus housing such as apartments instead of dormitories in the campus. Some other students prefer to live in the campus for some reasons. It is clear that living in off-campus housing is better than in the campus as it generates well-rounded students.

A student who lives in the off-campus housing is being able to be independent and responsible person in terms of individual aspect. When he is living without aid provided from anyone, he will be independently-minded as he will learn to carry out his responsibilities to manage the things which students in dormitories do not have to do such as the managing the house properties, settling the bills and care for the house maintenance. This experience will help him a lot in future. In addition, an independent student will try to stand by his own feet thus he will have more privacy than the students in dormitories that share the same space for living. A rented house is conducive for a student to concentrate more on studies as he has more privacy and this may improves his studies too.

In terms of social life, a house outside the campus is much safer than in the campus. It is too often that students properties get stolen in the dormitories. It is because their peers know their properties as they live together and there is a higher chance for the properties such as electronic gadgets, books, clothes and sometimes vehicles to be stolen. This is different to the situation in the off-living campus housing. A student can always place his properties somewhere people do not know in his house so it is safer. Besides, social crime also more likely to happen often in the campus as the students are not living far from each other. A rape case is a good example. The rape cases are always more in the campus than outside the campus because the society of teenagers are often driven by the feelings of rebel and exploring new things no matter good deeds or bad ones. Another benefit of staying in off-living campus housing is the student will have a chance to be part of a larger community. He will be able to be more open-minded to current issues happening in the society and among the students in the campus as well. He also will have a wider network connections between himself and the people around him, in a neighborhood for instance. He will get to know older people and kids, youths and adults too. This experience would surely benefits him in going through the real world outside the campus after studies.

It can be concluded that living in off-campus housing is better than living in dormitories as it builds a student to be a well-rounded person. This prepares the student well to live independently outside the campus in future.

General Education.

PROMPT TASK 5
10 AUGUST 2010

The fundamental principle of university education system starts with a foundation program which includes general education for students, covering many fields of studies before pursuing education to a higher level which is more particular to the field involved in the future. There is an issue occurred in the system whether should the university students to first get a general education and taking classes in many fields. I am inclined to believe that general education should be implemented in the first stage of university education system as this would generate well-rounded students and wholesome individuals.

General education mainly covers the basic knowledge of many fields. This type of education prepares students with variety of knowledge and enriches students’ study skills as they have to learn on many fields. Hence, the students can be more productive, successful in future and be well-prepared for the higher level of education. This is obviously different compared to the students who take classes only on their field of study. This does not help the students to learn the skills and knowledge beyond the specific field. Concentrating studies on the same field would also alleviates the students’ way of thinking. This is one of the disadvantages of specific studies as students could not be more creative, innovative and liberal in their future undertakings.

Students who are rich of knowledge are more likely to be independent and able to go through the career world. Basically, the daily life is all about to know the knowledge to do everything. Take an example of a student who has the general education that then pursues studies in the Engineering field. He might get an bad injury someday and it would not be a problem for him to stop the injury from keep bleeding. This is because the knowledge of the technique was previously taught in Biology class that explained the location of arteries and veins in the body. It will definitely be a dying experience for a student who does not have the general education. That is one of the examples that shows general education is very beneficial that students can apply various knowledge into their daily life.

In a nutshell, the implementation of general education in the first stage of university education system should be done rather than specific studies. It offers many benefits to students, such as being well-rounded graduates and wholesome individuals thus generates the future professional leaders.

An international organization has just given a grant to my hometown to fund a single improvement project. I would highly recommend the public transportation system to receive this funding. I strongly believe the improvement of the public transportation system that will be made in my hometown could upgrade the quality of life of the villagers.

I would like my hometown to be accommodated with public vehicle that operates daily so that the villagers will get many benefits from this improvement project. They can create and start businesses with outsiders with no boundary and limits as the transportation will always be provided. This leads to market expansion of the manufacturing and trading industry in my hometown and make the productivity increases higher. The increase in productivity also creates more job opportunity among the villagers, thus improves the economic status in my hometown and more development can be made.

The villagers will have a better quality of health and finance too. This improvement project will surely reduce pollution in my hometown as less vehicles will be on the road, reducing the noise pollution and air pollution as well. The usage of public transportation helps to promote cleaner air as less automobile will be on use. This reduces the release of smog of vehicles that may pollute the surrounding air. So, the villagers will have an eco-friendly environment that offers benefits to health. Having a stable economic level also leads to the increment of the quality of life. I will strongly recommend the villagers in my hometown to practice to use the public transport as it lowers the cost of living, that can make the economic level more stable. This is because the usage of cars and motorbikes cost a lot more than using the public transport, since there are many things about the vehicles to take care of, such as the maintenance of the car.

In conclusion, I am inclined to believe that the public transport system should receive the funding from the international organization as the improvement of the system could upgrade the quality of the villagers’ life in my hometown. The development that will be made from the funding should be operated wisely so that all of the villagers could enjoy the benefits in a long term and make the fund given worth in return.

PROMPT TASK 3 - 31 JULY 2010

Travelling is always a part of everyone’s life as we move to different places often. It is agreed by some people that surrounding affects the way people behave while they are travelling. On the other hand, some believed that people act in the way just they are, regardless they location. For this statement, I am inclined to believe that people behave differently from the way they behave at home as to show good examples to other people around them.

One of the reasons people used to behave differently when travelling is to bring the good name of their family, society and nation. This can be obviously seen in the way students behave when they are studying in another country. They tend to be better than they used to be at home, practicing good values and try to suit themselves in the new environment. Try to consider an example of a foreign student who act rude and impolite towards his friends. People may think that being rude is probably not a big deal in the student’s country and they might assume that is the way the society of that particular country behave like. This may lead people in surroundings to give bad impressions to the whole community which student belongs to.

Besides, people behave properly when they are not at home because they are not familiar enough with a new environment. This means that they cannot act like they are at home as different environments are all about adaptations of new cultures, new lifestyles and new ways of thinking. Hence, in order to undergo the process of suiting themselves in the society, they need to behave nicely to make people around them comfortable to deal with them.

In a nutshell, people often behave differently when they are at distinct places. In addition, I am strongly believe that they even have to practice good values to show good instance to the new people around them instead of being themselves naturally. If all travellers behave nicely in their journeys, that would be the most memorable journeys to be remembered of.

Modern Technology from Home.

TOEFL INDEPENDENT WRITING
QUESTION NO. 19

It is undeniable that the importance of technology has dominated the world nowadays. Almost all businesses and transactions are getting easier by the day with the use of technology. However, it is found that technology too, has drawbacks for some people. Personally, I am inclined to believe that the use of modern technology by the workers to work from home only benefits them, not the employers as they can work efficiently but the employers cannot have better relationships with them and the management of the documents make things easier for the workers yet the employers cannot observe their performance in work directly.

Modern technology offers benefits to workers, for example they can do their work from home with the help of the Internet connection which saves their time, money and energy needed to travel to the office. It also creates an efficient and effective way of working as sending documents can be done in a blink of an eye by clicks on the net. On the other hand, the employers cannot have better relationships with their workers as the technology only involves the exchange of the information and does not contribute to their communication skills. This may lead the company to having low quality workers, as they do not have the skills to deal with clients, thus affect the outcomes of the company which give bad returns to investments of the employers. It can be concluded that modern technology makes work efficient for the workers but it is a drawback for the employers.

In addition, modern technology revamps the management of the documents. From hard-copy to soft-copy files, such as PDF files and JPG files, the revolution made by technology helps works easier to be done as the workers do not need to burden themselves filing the hard-copy documents when they can actually save cost and space by storing the soft-copy documents in portable storage devices, for instance pendrives. However, technology prohibits the employers to observe the performance of the workers because they do not meet each other in order to complete the work, for example, they cannot evaluate the way of completing the work from the workers as the workers do not work under their observations as in the office. To sum up, the use of modern technology only benefits the workers, not the employers.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that the use of modern technology is only beneficial for the workers but not the employers. It is because the workers can work efficiently with the help of it but the employers cannot have better relationships with them and the management of the documents make things easier for the workers yet the employers cannot observe their performance in work directly. The employers and the workers should work in the office as well as using the modern technology so that the productivity and the quality of the outcomes will be higher thus increase the economic level of the country.

Young People in Governments.

AL 84680 - SECTION 3
TOEFL INDEPENDENT WRITING
QUESTION NO. 23

Government is always an organization which holds the biggest obligation towards a country, that is to administrate the nation. This important duty is not easy, therefore Government needs the suitable people in positions to run the system of administration. In my opinion, I strongly agree that it is a good idea for young people to take on important positions in Government as the state of health of young people are better to lead Government’s duty and the level of curiosity and creativity of young people help to increase the productivity of Government.

In the aspect of state of health, young people are obviously better than the old people. This shows that they can actually perform better in carrying out duties because when they are healthy, there will be no such health problems that may distract or procrastinate them from completing the duties given. On the other hand, the high level of maturity of older people is a strong reason why they should be placed in the important positions in Government. They have more experience and skills, thus made them more mature and can guide the younger people on how to make things in a right way or getting tasks easier to be done.

The level of curiosity and creativity of young people help to increase the productivity of Government. They usually try to find some new and good ways to carry out tasks. When there are more ways to run the duties, productivity can be increased in a short time. The outcomes also will be more efficient and effective. In the context of Government duties, young people can do more tasks and duties to smoothe the system in administration. However, young people always caught in social problems and tend to rush in making decisions, thus they are not suitable enough to carry out duties in Government as the decisions they made can affect the outcomes and productivity of Government.

In a nutshell, I am inclined to believe that it is a good idea for young people to take important positions in Government as young people are healthier than the old people and the level of curiosity and creativity of them lead to an increment of productivity of Government. Therefore, Government should hire more young people to carry out the obligation to administrate the country so that innovative, productive and ambitious future leaders can be produced.

My new acquaintance is thinking about studying my native language. This is a good decision since it is very beneficial for an individual to be interested in something alien from his knowledge. I would strongly convince him to study my native language as I would say that it enhances his communication skills, increases his knowledge and get into a wide network of people.

Communication skills can be enhanced from getting more knowledge on other native languages. It is because a native language engages with the way of speaking a conversation and to be in manner. So, different native languages have distinct ways of speaking. My friend would enhance his communication skills by knowing the right way to speak my native language that indirectly boosts up his self confidence to be in the society that use my native language.

My friend can also get more knowledge as this language is a new thing for him. It is a bonus for a person to know more knowledge as he will be respected by others. This will surely increases his quality of self-worth when he learns about more knowledge than others do. This criteria also can be a bonus for him when he want to apply for a job. It is hard to find employees with such good quality such as having a special value in the resume, for instance, knowing more languages than other applicants do. He can also make businesses with my native people as he can speak well in my native language soon.

Learning a new language avoids a person to feel awkward to deal with people who uses that particular language. My friend might have no problem get along with the people in my area as we know the same language and converse in the same way. He could get into a wider network of people in a new society. He also can make numerous friends from the society of my native people which may benefits him in future undertakings.

In conclusion, it is a good decision for my friend to study my native language and I would highly recommend him to do that as it enhances his communication skills, increases his knowledge and get into a wider network of people. This may benefits him in future.
